Hutch Makeover

My mom has the perfect spot in her kitchen for a hutch. She had envisioned something with cabinets on the bottom, some "counter" space, some country character....

and rustic red.

After some Craig's List hunting, sanding, painting, distressing, and sealing, she got her hutch!

Well, except that it's still in my garage :/   But there it is, mom! Hope you like it. I guess I should get it to you soon so you could get some use out of it.

I learned a few lessons along the way.

1) Red spray paint gets everywhere. Even with a drop cloth, it turned our garage floor red and I tracked a few steps on our carpet.
2) Red spray paint does not come off your skin easily. I looked sun burnt for a few days.
3) Red spray paint does NOT belong on jewelery. But nail polish remover and a tooth brush work well for that!
4) Long sleeves and (left over from nursing school) gloves come in handy!

Hi Margaret,

Thanks for your comment on my blog. If you ever need help with your photography I can at least point you in the direction of help.
I love what you did to this hutch! Have you heard of Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint? It is the latest craze in the furniture painting world. It is expensive: $35 a quart but you do NOT have to sand or prime before using it. It is not messy either and cleans up with water.
I have also ordered Milk paint called Safe Paint. It is only $10.50 a bag to mix with water making a quart. You can google everything to check it out. Good luck!
